West Java campus evacuated after bomb threat

Swadaya Gunung Jati University in Cirebon, West Java, was evacuated by local police on Saturday morning after the local police chief and university lectures received apparent bomb threat.

Cirebon City Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Ary Laksmana Wijaya told kompas.com that he received seven bomb threats on the campus through text messages on his cellular phone at around 8:30 a.m. earlier in the day.

The message sender said that any activity at the campus should be stopped because “a set of bombs” have been installed, he said.

“After receiving the third message I immediately deployed my subordinates to the campus,” Ary said.

A number of students who were having a test and lectures and university employees who were having a meeting were evacuated.

After less than two-hour check of the campus and its surroundings, police bomb squad declared the building was safe and there were no explosives.

The university later continued its activities.
