Nine protesters injured in Jakarta rally

Several clashes erupted between protesters and the police during a rally decrying the Bank Century bailout outside the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Wednesday, leaving nine demonstrators injured.

“We found five protesters who had been hurt, one of them was admitted to Mintohardjo General Hospital for medical treatment. Most of them suffered bruising caused by blunt objects or tear gas canisters,” Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) field worker Khrisna told kompas.com.

Meanwhile, Jakarta’s health agency provided first aid to four injured protesters.

“We have rushed one of them to hospital suffering to head wounds, which were probably from thrown rocks,” said agency officer Sudigdo.

PMI deployed five ambulances, while the city health agency placed five around the House building, where thousands of people thronged for the rally.
