Search continues for missing hikers in Sulawesi

A search and rescue effort continued Friday for five men who went missing on Mount Kambuno in North Luwu, South Sulawesi, on Feb. 10.

“They are suspected to have gone to lower areas to look for water,” Ogi Pasolang, a coordinator for the search told kompas.com.

On Saturday, search workers found the hikers’ backpack, tent, cellular phones and food supplies, at a location near a water source often used by hikers as a campsite.

The missing men are believed to be alive.

Separately, Lt. Col. Dede Indrazat, a local military command chief, said the hikers were probably in the Masamba area.

The five hikers were scheduled to end their hike on the 2,950-meter-high mountain on Feb. 7, before they went missing.
